This book is essential for all students of the English language, scholars, and reviewers. About the Authors Randolph Quirk was an English Professor and author. He was born in the Isle of Man in 1920 and studied English at the University College London. He completed his MS, PhD and a D.Litt and became a lecturer at the same university. He was a Commonwealth Fund Harkness fellow at Yale and Michigan and was a Reader at University of Durham. Geoffrey Leech was a Professor of Linguistics and Modern English. He Leech was born in 1936 and was a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Leech was a Professor of Linguistics and Modern English at the Lancaster University and later became a Research Professor in Linguistics. He is Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at Lancaster University. Jan Svartvik is a Scandinavian scholar of English language and a Professor at the University of Lund, Sweden. He has published several papers on English language and grammar and is a member of prestigious institutions like The Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, and The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Sidney Greenbaum is a professor of the English Language and Literature at University College London. He also served as the Director of the Survey of English Usage.
