This is the third set of volumes in the well known series entitled Concept's International Series in Geography. This multi volume set hasa wide coverage under the title Perspectives in Urban Geography. The earlier two sets in the series were: Perspectives in Agricultural Geography and Perspectives in Gemorphology. Traditional studies on aspects of Urban Geography had been concentration on observational records of developments of towns and cities till the subject came to acquire a behavioural approach recently. What resulted was a new matrix of philosophies, methodologies and their ingenious application to what had been researched through the years. The present set of volumes ventures to make a rigorous survey of the literature on Urban Geography after its reorientation as it were. This volume on Contemporary Urban issues has been designed to reflect some of the research and study which geographers and other social scientists have been engaged in and which bear social relevance the the contemporary issues and problems. It studies vital aspects of urban phenomena in today\'s world. The volume has been divided into five distinct parts: (i) Environmental deterioration and human stress; (ii) Poverty and the poor in cities; (iii) Conflict and crime in the cities; (iv) Pollution and health in cities; (v) Social consequences of population. The volume should be useful in the teaching of relevant contemporary issues and problems pertaining to modern metropolis and is current or newly developing courses on contemporary urban problems.
