Public libraries that take a proactive approach to homework help - by setting up organized, public library homework centres - have the potential to become catalysts for better performance in school, improved self esteem, and engaged, co-operative learning. In this volume, Cindy Mediavilla describes what constitutes an effective homework centre - a separate space in the library, with set hours, clearly defined services, and an assigned staff member. Computers are helpful, but not essential, according to Mediavilla. What is key is that a person is present and responsible to oversee the programme.
