He was born in Parkersburg in West Virginia and graduated in computer science from the University of Utah. He was honored with an Oscar for his significant achievements in computer animated movies. In 2006, he was awarded with the IEEE John von Neumann Medal for extraordinary contributions to the field of computer graphics in modeling and animation. The Computer History Museum named him a Museum Fellow for his work in computer graphics, animation and filmmaking.
