His pursuit of her is hindered by her flirtatiousness, which is frowned upon by the other expatriates when they meet in Switzerland and Italy. James' "Daisy Miller" was a big success when it was published in 1878 and continues to be popular. Although some people criticized the story for being an "outrage on American Girlhood," Daisy Miller is one of James' most popular works, as well as The Turn of the Screw.
