David Copperfield was originally published in serial form from May 1849 through November 1850. It is the first of Charles Dickens' novels to be written entirely in the first person. Dickens' converted his autobiographocal impulse into fiction, allowing him to explore and reveal some uncomfortable truths from his life, expecially his childhood. Albeit David Copperfield's experiences at the Murdstone and Grinby's warehouse, his schooling at Salem House, his relationship with Dora, etc., all having their bases in Dickens' own life, David Copperfield is a work of fiction.
