Dead Souls is a book that sheds light on the corruption in society. It is considered to be Russia’s first major novel. Summary of the Book A mysterious man called Chichikov has just arrived in ‘N’. No one knows anything about this strange man who has been visiting several landowners in town. Chichikov has been going around making strange offers to the people in the provincial town and a lot of them seem to agree to his terms and conditions. He has bought a lot of dead serfs that had been registered, therefore saving many people from paying tax. However, his plan is to use all of these dead souls to make himself an aristocrat again.  About Nikolai Gogol Nikolai Gogol was a dramatist, novelist and short story writer. At first he was seen as a figure of the Natural School of Russian literary realism. His work also had a bit of surrealism and the grotesque. A few short stories written by Gogol are: Diary of a Madman, The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich, The Portrait, and The Carriage.
