Dear John is an intense story of romance between its protagonists John and Savannah. However, a decision that he makes turns everything around and now he must learn to live with the fact that the one he loves is the one he has to live without. Summary of the Book John is an angry young teenager who drops out of school and enlists himself to join the army. He is not sure of what he wants to do with his life, but this soon changes when he meets Savannah, the girl who captures his heart and changes everything that he has ever known. Their attraction for each other grows into a love that cannot be described in few words. Savannah waits for John to return from duty, and he waits to be home and settle down with the love of his life. However, everything changes when 9/11 strikes. John feels that it is his duty to re-enlist and serve his country during the difficult time. He is away for a very long time and lonely Savannah finds new love in the meantime. She writes him a letter that begins with “Dear John”. These two words break his heart and change both their lives. When he is back home, John needs to come to terms with the fact that Savannah is now married to someone else, and that he needs to live his life knowing that she is his true love.
