Guilandina bonduc grows up to 6 meters long, often sprawling over other vegetation. The stems are covered with curved spines, and the plant has large, bi-pinnate leaves with numerous small, oval leaflets. The yellowish-green flowers appear in axillary racemes and are followed by spiny, dehiscent pods containing 1–2 smooth, grey seeds.
