The Rain Tree can grow up to 25–30 meters tall, with a broad, umbrella-shaped crown that can span 20–30 meters in diameter. Its bipinnate, feathery leaves fold in response to rain or at night, giving it its common name. The tree produces small, pink, powder-puff-like flowers clustered in round inflorescences, followed by flat, dark-brown seed pods.
