Providing an up-to-date overview of depressive disorder, this work presents information on the biological pathogenic mechanisms, aetiological vulnerability factors and stressors triggering the occurrence of pathogenesis and psychopathology of affective disorders. This approach is continued in the discussion of treatment and prophylaxis in which biological procedures and psychosocial interventions are covered. Methods of treatment discussed range from psychosurgery to sleep deprivation and family intervention.
