Devdas is a classic Bengali novel written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1917. The story revolves around Devdas, a young man from a wealthy family, who falls in love with his childhood friend, Paro (Parvati). However, due to societal pressures and misunderstandings, their love remains unfulfilled. Paro is married off to another man, and Devdas descends into a spiral of self-destruction, eventually becoming an alcoholic. He also encounters Chandramukhi, a courtesan who falls in love with him, but Devdas remains obsessed with Paro.The novel explores themes of love, societal expectations, class differences, and self-destructive behavior. It has been adapted into several films in multiple languages, with the 1955 and 2002 Bollywood adaptations being the most famous.
