In the landscape of English language reference works, the Dictionary of Modern English Usage stands as a guide, exemplary not only for its comprehensive coverage of grammar, syntax and style but also for its practical approach to the emerging complexities of English usage. . The dictionary attempts to update and expand its content to reflect the linguistic changes of the 21st century. The main aim of this edition is to provide clear, concise and practical advice on the use of modern English. However, language is a constantly evolving entity, shaped by social change, technological progress, and cultural shifts. Recognizing this, we have attempted to refresh the dictionary's entries to accommodate the inclusive and global nature of English today. This edition introduces new entries that address emerging linguistic phenomena, update existing examples with contemporary examples, and rethink prescriptive norms in light of descriptive realities.In writing this edition, we have maintained a delicate balance between preserving the timeless wisdom of the original entries and adopting the flexibility necessary to remain relevant in a rapidly changing linguistic landscape. To achieve this, we consulted a wide range of sources, including contemporary linguistic research, the corpora of modern English usage and feedback from the dictionary's wide readership.
