Digital divide implies the gap among those who have access to digital technologies and those who do not have such access. The difference is not necessarily determined by an access to internet, but by an access to ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and to media that the different segments of society can use. The digital divide is an important problem that policy makers face and it is much more complex than simply building out telecommunication networks and infrastructure. The divide is the result of a wide range of social factors, including but not limited to income, education and literacy. Sociologists view the digital divide in terms of inequality of access by socio-economic status, social class, ethnicity and race.
