Césaire's Discourse on Colonialism is an authoritative commentary on the racist and discriminatory attitude of the West towards the Colonial areas. The author comments that Russia of the age of the Soviet was a more positive society, but that it was misled by Stalinist propaganda. He compares the attitude of the French towards Africans with that of the Nazi Germans towards the Jews and likens the two in simple terms. His words on the concept of Négritude and the evolution of what is now called “Black Pride” sets him apart from many Francophone African writers, and secures his place amongst the staunchest speakers for equal rights and the most vocal of the leaders of the independence movements against the 19th century European empires. This is a must-have for all students of colonialism and its after-effects on society.
