Emma is a classical romance novel by Jane Austen. It is considered to be a comedy of manners, and it tells the tale of a woman who tries to play with love, only to feel the brunt of her own attempts at matchmaking. Summary of the Book A genteel lady named Emma Woodhouse fancies herself a matchmaker. She believes that she is beyond the viles of men, and that she can enjoy a life as a spinster. However, when she introduces her best friend Miss Taylor to her future husband, she begins to take her “gift” seriously. She tries out her skills on Harriet Smith and Mr. Elton, the local vicar. However, she is about to learn that the heart wants what the heart wants and no one will get in its way. This is a hilarious tale of one woman’s tribulations with love, and her failure to see that she is the one who is most vulnerable.
