Empire: How Britain Made: The Modern World is a well researched chronicle of the once invincible British Empire. It tends to answer the two most vital questions relating to the formidable British Imperialism; how it commenced and what are its upsides? Summary Of The Book The British Empire which used to be considered as unassailable even a century ago dominated nearly one fourth of the earth’s surface for approximately four hundred years. The tentacles of the mighty empire stretched from Africa to Asia. Empire: How Britain Made: The Modern World explains how a small island nation was able to govern such a vast swathe of land vanquishing all the opposition forces. It states how the Empire introduced modern governance and ideologies in the colonies. According to the author the railways, democratic dispensations, good governance, and economic prosperity of the erstwhile dependencies are the positive ramifications of the British Imperialism. Though the book has been criticized by a section of the readers for being a tad lop-sided, nevertheless it is a good general account of the British Empire. It acknowledges the excesses of the Empire and at the same time highlights the positives. About Niall Ferguson Niall Campbell Douglas Ferguson was born in the year 1964. Besides being a historian he is also a television presenter. He was included in the list of hundred most influential people in the world in 2004 by the famous Time magazine.
