The present monograph enquires into the nature of Dr. F.R. Leavis’s view of the function of criticism and the concepts and criteria that he employs for a reasoned and consistent appreciation of literature. Such concepts and criteria are not applied in literary studies as preconceived values but emerge out of Dr. Leavis’s actual appreciation of literature: hence his disparagement of theoretical criticism, historicism, philosophical and conceptual, framework as guiding principles, and his strong defense of the personal judgement based on taste as well as disciplined intelligence.
