The trials and tribulations of a young gentleman who acquires a cadetship or commission in an Infantry Regiment of the East India Company in the mid 1800s. Written as a warning to others to avoid sending their youngest sons to the Asian Continent it describes the hardships involved - not least his inability to maintain a housefull of servants on a Subalterns pay and the unliklihood of forming a relationship with any of the fairer sex while they have better prospects available.
