Far from the Madding Crowd is a classic novel by Thomas Hardy. Summary of the Book When Bathsheba Everdene, an independent and free-spirited woman comes to Weatherbury to work as a farmer in the largest estate in the area, she attracts the attentions of three men. Boldwood, a gentleman farmer, Sergeant Troy, a former soldier, and Gabriel Oak, a kind shepherd, all vie for her affections. They begin to complicate her life through their actions and threaten the peace of the community in doing so. A novel of honest sexual portrayal for its time, this story of slow courtship and swift passion is Hardy at his finest.
