Far from the Madding Crowd is a classic novel by Thomas Hardy. Summary of the Book When Bathsheba Everdene, an independent and free-spirited woman comes to Weatherbury to work as a farmer in the largest estate in the area, she attracts the attentions of three men. Boldwood, a gentleman farmer, Sergeant Troy, a former soldier, and Gabriel Oak, a kind shepherd, all vie for her affections. They begin to complicate her life through their actions and threaten the peace of the community in doing so. A novel of honest sexual portrayal for its time, this story of slow courtship and swift passion is Hardy at his finest. About Thomas Hardy Thomas Hardy was an English novelist and poet, best remembered for his works: The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, and Jude the Obscure. A student at King’s College, London, he achieved success after the publication of his fourth novel and was awarded the British Order of Merit for his work in 1910. The current title was adapted into several motion pictures, including one by John Schlesinger in 1967, starring Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, Peter Finch, and Alan Bates. Another version is current under post-production and due for release in 2014 by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen, Tom Sturridge, and Juno Temple.
