The book tells the story of five siblings, Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane, and their baby brother, who discover a magical creature called the Psammead while playing in a sand pit during their summer holiday.The Psammead, also known as the sand fairy, is a grumpy, ancient creature who has the power to grant wishes, but with unexpected and often unwanted consequences. The children use their wishes to experience exciting adventures, such as becoming invisible, flying, and time-traveling, but soon realize that their wishes are not always as great as they seem.
