KASHMIR as a field of Folk-lore literature is, not surpassed by any other country in the world. Many of the tales are purely Kashmiri, in origin, while few are undoubtedly variants of popular tales current in India, which have been adapted and modified to suit the language, style of thought, and social usages. Many of these and other eastern stories were introduced into Europe by the Hans in the time of Genghis Khan. Many of these stories were translated into Persian, and thence into Syriac and Arabic. It is probable that Arabs carried some of them into Europe, and that European invaders, like the Crusaders, imported fragmentary portions into their countriesSome of these stories also became very popular in the Westduring Middle Ages and adopted by Westem Monles and otherreligious teachers for the sake of the impression ths made.on theminds of illiterate hearers.James Hinton Knowles (1856-1943) was a British Misstonagto Kashmir in 19th century. He had visited Kashmir in rhe 18sUsand authored two important books about Kashmiri language and culture. He was the first Principal of the renowned Tyndale Biscoe School Kashmir from 1876 to 1880.
