Summary of the Book Three strangers, John Merlyn, Cully Cross and Jordan Hamley, meet in the Hotel Xanadu and gamble together. After a huge win, Jordan commits suicide despite having won a challenging game of baccarat against the casino’s director. Merlyn then returns to New York City and lives with his family. However, Cully Cross chooses to reside permanently in Las Vegas, and he desires to win a reputation as a successful gambler and hustler. Gronevelt, the director of the casino, notices him and recruits him to become his second-in-command. In time, Merlyn falls into bad times and takes on a job in a US Army Recruitment Centre. He is investigated when he lets a corrupt colleague convince him to start taking kickbacks to help the kids of rich citizens escape the Vietnam draft. To try and escape the situation he is in, he goes to Cully for help. However, the hand of death seems to linger around Merlyn, for anyone he gets close to seems to die, one way or another.
