An account of the authors 4 years stay in Ceylon in his capacity as a coffee planter and the editor of a newspaper. In this book he aims to give an interesting and truthful picture of jungle life without exaggeration or FALSE glitter. Recounted have are the life, scenery, inhabitants, costume and character of the people that the author spent his time with. The fauna and sport is lavishly described and the events in the jungle are vivid enough so as to sketch a picture in the mind of the reader. Along with describing the fauna, the book also takes the reader to several sites of historical interest; Kandy, Dambula, Anuradhapura are described, a 50 page note is given at the start of the 2nd volume. The last four chapters of the 2nd volumes is the life story of the Kandian friend of the author called Marandhan; it also tells the story of the British occupation of Kandy and the journey of Maradhan to Burma.
