Mary Shelley tells the tale of a scientist who hopes to bring alive a creation and play god in Frankenstein, a classic horror novel. Summary of the Book Inspired by past alchemists, Victor Frankenstein dreams of discovering the secret of life. Disillusioned by his delusions, he enrolls at the University of Ingolstadt, studying chemistry. He returns home after graduation, restarting his experiments with gusto. He puts together a creature from body parts he steals from a local cemetery and sets up a lab to try and bring it to life. He believes that lightning holds the secret to life, and he channels a bolt of lightning into the body. His experiments bear fruit as the creature comes to life. However, it bears no resemblance to his plans. It is grotesque, standing at 8 feet in height. It bears some intelligence as it tries to speak, but he abhors it. The creature runs away, and Frankenstein falls into depression at his failure. He returns home to discover that his brother has been murdered, and at the scene of the crime stands the creature he made with his own hands.
