This practical text helps solve engineering problems that involve mechanical components, while focusing on the fundamentals of component design. Summary Of The Book This is a truly unique and handy book as far as successfully understanding machine component problems and finding an effective solution is concerned. It not only explains the different properties of materials and their strength, but also guides readers on how to efficiently apply this knowledge to different machine components. There are numerous examples and problems given at the end of each chapter to ensure that readers fully understand and effectively solve machine component design glitches and problems. However, it should be noted that this book isn’t for beginners and novices. It is a design book that’s aimed at second or final year students in Mechanical Engineering, and technicians working in the field of Automotive Technology. The fundamentals of machine component design are presented in twenty chapters that are divided into two groups: Design Background and Examples in Designing Parts. The book starts off with example problems that involve actual mechanical devices, and readers will need some prior knowledge on dynamics, statics, material science, and strength of materials in order to understand and solve these problems. The second part of the book deals with problems that are associated with the analysis, application, and design of machine members. This edition of the book has additional material in the form of the sections, General Approach for Fatigue Design, Fatigue Crack Growth, and Engineering Materials Selection Process. The solved examples in this book are neatly sectioned to facilitate better understanding. The fourth edition of Fundamentals of Machine Component Design was first published in the year 2005, and is an ideal resource for every mechanical engineer. It has been thoroughly well received, especially in mechanical engineering circles, and is the perfect desk reference book. About Robert C. Juvinall and Kurt M. Marshek Kurt M. Marshek is an author and Harry L. Kent Professor Emeritus, who is known for his academic books. His other popular book is Design of Machine and Structural Parts. His experience in the field of mechanical design mainly stems from his tenure at The University of Texas at Austin, where he worked in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He belongs to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and is also a fellow of the National Academy of Forensic Engineers. His primary areas of interest are machine design, vehicle accident reconstruction, and product safety. Robert C. Juvinall was once Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, before his demise in the year 1995. Another popular book written by Robert C. Juvinall is Engineering Considerations of Stress, Strain, and Strength. During his time in the University of Michigan, he was involved with the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He was also a member of many honor societies, like ASME, SESA, and SEA. He is survived by his daughters, Nancy and Margaret Lee, and his wife, Arlene.
