There are only two free cities remaining, of which Pale is being protected by Anomander Rake. However, after a terrible war with the Empire, Rake withdraws. The Empress takes over the city of Pale, but her troops have suffered some major losses. The common people are eager for all the battles to end as essential resources are getting wasted. Laseen is still keen on gaining control over the last remaining free city of Darujhistan. Soon, it becomes clear that the Gods and other evil forces are joining the battle. Captain Paran tries to find out why such magical forces are becoming involved in Malazan Empire’s struggle to gain power. The characters are well developed, making this book a very interesting read. This novel was a nominee for the World Fantasy Award, and established the author as one of the best writers of fantasy fiction. About Steven Erikson Steven Erikson, born in 1959, is a Canadian author, anthropologist, and archaeologist. Some books of the Malazan Book Of The Fallen series are The Crippled God, Memories Of Ice, Toll The Hounds, and The Bonehunters. As a thesis project, he wrote a collection of short stories titled A Ruin of Feathers. Some of his other works include Walk In Shadow, Fishin' With Grandma Matchie, Revolvo And Other Canadian Tales, This River Awakens, and Stolen Voices. The name Steven Erikson is the pseudonym of Steve Rune Lundin. The author graduated from the Iowa Writers' Workshop in the United States. The Malazan Book of the Fallen series sold more than 250,000 books till 2006. He enjoys oil painting. Erikson lived with his family in the United Kingdom and has now moved back to Winnipeg, Canada.
