Geography and Rural Development is a constructive dialogue between the professional in the field of social sciences, especially geography, and practitioners in the field of rural development. The papers in this volume were presented at a national symposium on Geography and Rural Development organised by the Department by the Department of Geography of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (Gujarat) and sponsored by the University Grants Commission. Papers presented at the Symposium have been arranged in five parts. The papers in the first part set the conceptual frame within the parameters of which deliberations took place. The remaining three parts deal with three significant facets of rural development with which the geographers interacted viz., land use, rural economic activity, and transport and marketing. The final part discusses the role of geography and geographers in the process and geographers in the process of integrated rural development as a whole. The present volume is an invaluable addition to the literature on the subject and details useful practical ways in which the skills and expertise of geographers can be utilised in stimulating rural development. About the Author DR. R.N.P. Sinha obtained his Ph. D. (Land-use) from Patna University in 1961 and is currently a Professor in the Department of Geography of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Gujarat. His scholarly interests centre upon Rural Land-Use and Environment, Political Geography and Marine Affairs, Cultural Geography of India, Geographic Information Systems and Computer Graphics. He trekked through the eastern hill districts. He trekked through the eastern hill districts of Nepal in 1953 and visited U.K., Canada, Mexico and the U.S.A. in 1979 where he also presented a paper at the Annual Meet of the Association of American Geographers in Philadelphia. In 1988, on U.S. Fulbright Travel Fellowship, Prof. Sinha was a visiting professor at the University of Kentucky (Lexington) when he also delivered guest lectures at the Universities of South Carolina (Columbia) when he also delivered guest lectures t the Universities of South Carolina (Columbia) and Wisconsin (Platteville). He has published over 30 research papers in Indian and foreign journals and has translated L. D. Stamp's book Africa A Study in Tropical Development (in Hindi). He has edited Mrs. V.A. Janaki's Felicitation volume Environment and Human Response: Selected Essays in Geography (Concept, 1990). His forthcoming publications include Geography and Business
