India is a concept. India is an experiment through ages. India is an exception. India is India no parallel example exists. India has a wider meaning than a territorial unit which we know today. The aim of this book is to provide a means to know more about the Geography of India. The work on this book was initially started with Professor S.P. Chatterjee. The Present book is based on a modified version of the earlier scheme. Obviously, there is a reflection of Prof. Chatterjee ideas in this book. The chapters have been divided according to the themes. Some of the themes are conventional but essential for a volume like this. But, some new themes have also been included, such as environment or Indian Ocean. In conventional chapters, special emphasis has been made to add the recent developments as well. Further, attempts have been made to have a representative table and/or map in chapter. A bibliography has also been added so that if anybody is interested in knowing more about the themes he will get women indications. The contents of the book may fulfil the requirements of graduate or post graduate courses in geography of India in different universities. It should be useful to people who are mere seriously interested in knowing about India. Social scientists, planners, geographers, geologists and the like may find this book interesting. It may prove to be a useful collection in the libraries as well. About the Author Dr. Nag has been author of nearly hundred research papers and several publications. His latest books are Population, Settlement and Development in Zambia, Geography of India and Digital Remote Sensing. He has been UN consultant in Census Cartography in Oman. At present he is the Director of the National Atlas & Thematic Mapping Organisation, Calcutta.
