The novel is divided into three parts, each of which follows a different stage in Pip's life. In the first part, Pip is a young boy living with his abusive older sister and her kind-hearted husband, Joe Gargery, a blacksmith. One evening, Pip encounters an escaped convict, Magwitch, who demands that Pip bring him food and a file to remove his chains. Pip complies, but the incident sets off a chain of events that changes his life forever.In the second part of the novel, Pip comes into a fortune from an anonymous benefactor, and moves to London to live as a gentleman. There, he becomes infatuated with Estella, the ward of a wealthy spinster named Miss Havisham, who has raised her to be cold and unfeeling toward men.
