The steady rise of power cost in combination with regulatory initiatives and government policies that aim to address social responsibility, are driving the academia and industry towards energy efficient solutions for ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). In addition, the demand for ubiquitous coverage and higher speed networking causes continuous enhancements in network infrastructure, while the increasing traffic volumes and flat rate business / charging models are causing network operators difficulties to secure profits. Green or energy efficient communications is the means to reduce the cost of telecommunication services according to the demand of use, helping also network operators to be environmental friendly. About the Author Konstantinos Samdanis, NEC Europe Ltd, Heidelberg, Germany is active at the Broadband Forum (BBF) in where he is the editor of a Work Item named Energy Efficient Mobile Backhaul and has served as a board member of the Green oversight Committee (GoC). Peter Rost, Mobile and Wireless Networks Group at NEC Laboratories Europe is working in BU projects as well as the EU FP7 project FLAVIA. Among others, these projects tackle new flexible solutions for MAC layer implementations, system level performance of IEEE 802.16 and 3GPP LTE, as well as energy efficiency in mobile communication networks.   Andreas Maeder, NEC Laboratories Europe is currently a Senior Researcher, working on next generation mobile wireless network topics including resource allocation, energy efficiency, network architecture, and congestion management. He was responsible for the evaluation of 802.16m for the ITU-R IMT-Advanced programme. Michela Meo, Associate Professor, Electronics and Telecommunications Department, Politecnico di Torino, Italy was involved in the organization of several conferences and, in particular, she was program co-chair of the 1st Infocom workshop on Green Networking and Smart Grids and of the IEEE Online Conference on Green Communications (GreenCom) 2012. Christos Verikoukis, Senior Researcher, Technical University of Catalonia, Spain. He is currently a Senior Researcher at CTTC and an adjunct professor at UB. His area of expertise is in the design of energy efficient protocols, short range wireless cooperative and network coded communications. Dr. Verikoukis has participated and coordinated several national and European projects. He has published 40 journal papers and over 100 conference papers.
