Start by preparing the soil mixed with organic manure or compost before sowing the seeds. Ensure all frost has passed and the soil is free from weeds or insects. Open the seed packet carefully over a white sheet of paper, as some seeds are very small and can easily fall without being noticed. Once the soil is ready, gently sprinkle the seeds on top and lightly cover them with a thin layer of soil or press them down softly by hand. When watering, use a sprinkler or your hands to gently sprinkle water - avoid using a pipe or mug during the first week, as the strong water flow may disturb seed germination. Depending on the variety, germination can take anywhere from 10 to 18 days. For herbs and other small seeds, cover the sowing area with transparent polythene in the evening to encourage faster germination. Flowers, tomatoes, chillies, peppers, brinjals, and similar plants should be transplanted once they grow to 3–4 inches in height. All types need minimal water and should receive at least 2-3 hours of sunlight daily, though winter varieties can germinate well with just 1-2 hours of sun.
