Jean Sasson has interviews with Najwa Laden, Osama Bin Laden’s first wife and with Omar, his fourth son. This book is a compilation of those interviews and it brings out some startling facts about Osama’s family life as well as his life as a kingpin of terrorists. Summary Of The Book Omar and his mother Najwa thought that they knew Osama well, but some time during their life with him they started realising that the man they loved and respected had a dark side. Growing Up Bin Laden is the story of Najwa, a young Syrian girl who is married to her first cousin Osama. Believing him to be gentle and kindly, their marriage is initially a happy one. But as time passes, Najwa begins to see the changes in her husband as he is slowly drawn into the dangerous world of militants and their activities. Osama is no longer the same amicable husband and father. His behaviour is different. The lives of Najwa and her innocent children turn into turmoil, and they are always on the move, escaping from country to country. Omar wanted his father’s love more than anything. In Growing Up Bin Laden, Omar has narrated his early life in Afghanistan with his father, and his subsequent escape to Saudi Arabia. Told by mother and son, a gripping story unfolds. They present the readers with an amazing story of a man loved by some, and hated by many. Their shocking revelations tell the readers about his dislike for luxuries, including medicine and electricity, about how he planned to make his sons tough by exposing them to the rigorous life in the desert without water and food, and the horrible murder of a boy of his age by a group of jihadis living with them. Omar further narrates the happenings in the home of the Bin Ladens in Jeddah on the day of the twin tower attack, and about his mother’s phone call after her escape from Afghanistan, just a couple of days before the terror attack on New York.
