He is best known as the lyricist behind the song Jai Ho and for writing: Dhuan, Half a Rupee Stories, Kharashein, Autumn Moon and Kuchh Aur Nazmein. Gulzar and A. R. Rahman together won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Jai Ho at the 81st Academy Awards. The song also won them the Grammy Award. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan and the Sahitya Akademi Award for his contributions towards the arts.
