Hamlet is a tragedy and one of Shakespeare’s longest and darkest plays. Summary of the Book When Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, returns home on the death of his father, he discovers that his mother has already remarried. His father’s brother, Claudius, has seized the throne and Hamlet discovers that treachery is involved. His father was murdered by Claudius’ machinations in a plot to win the throne. Angered, Hamlet begins to see his father’s ghost which instructs him to exact revenge. However, the act of revenge will result in the destruction of Hamlet and his entire family in ways he cannot imagine.
