Hamlet is a tragic play by William Shakespeare, telling the story of the Prince of Denmark. Summary of the Book Prince Hamlet, the son of the deceased king and the nephew of King Claudius, his father's brother and successor, is the hero of this play. He returns to Denmark to find that his mother has already remarried, marrying his uncle. Soon, the castle grounds are haunted by the King’s ghost and Hamlet decides to meet the spectre. The ghost reveals a secret to Hamlet: his father didn’t die of natural causes. In fact, his uncle poisoned him and usurped the throne. Hamlet begins conspiring with the ghost to exact revenge. However, as events unfold, he begins to find that Claudius isn’t an easy man to catch. About William Shakespeare William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and writer. Best remembered for his plays, he is called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". Shakespeare's plays have been adapted into several movies, and they are enacted in theatres around the world even to this day, centuries after his death. His works came to the spotlight in the Nineteenth century and he was idolized by the Romantics. A prolific writer and poet, he is also known for his poems, mainly the Sonnets.
