An understanding of those who thought and planned for children, will make us appreciate the vision they had for the future of the child. Without this knowledge and awareness, one cannot admire and appreciate those who have made children's existence conspicuous and have made a solid contribution towards children. The first chapter highlights the place of child in the past. The subsequent chapters deal with the National Policy for Children and the events that lead to the planning of this historic event. Equally important are others on Child Legislation, the Children's Charger and Rights of the Child, and these find an important place in the book. Universal Children's Day which is celebrated every year. Each year new theme has contributed to the different needs of the children and has created awareness in the gaps in services. The chapters that follow deal with different organisation engaged in promoting the well being of the child. In the revised Edition, added new Chapter is on Indigenous Medicines for children and mother. Also another Chapter on the Five-Year Plans have the Eighth Plan and Projected Ninth Five-Year Plan. Last but most important is the Chapter on Statistics on Children in India which I consider most valuable for all purposes. About the Author Smt. Pramila Pandit Barooah (b. 1922) received her Masters degree from the Home Economics College (with Major in child development and minor in Nutrition and Extension) at the Oregan State University, U.S.A., and has had an opportunity to visit other countries round the globe to see for herself the work pertaining to the child. He has toured extensively in the country and has been working with and for the children, wherever she happened to be since 1943. She has worked in villages, tribal areas and in towns, in Maharashtra (then Central Province and Berar), Naini, Allahabad (U.P.) In Assam she worked in villages starting schools and working with the village folks, where nobody dared to go. She was able to help the Assam Agriculture University in starting the Home Science College and was its Hony. Dean of the College. She also worked in Meghalaya. She worked with Indian Council for Child Welfare as an office Bearer for 18 years, in Swami Shivananda Memorial Institute for 10 years, as Treasurer in Bharat Grameen Mahila Sangh and later as President in Country Women's Association of India. Giving up organisational work, she started doing writing work and has so far written 13 books mainly to enlighten children and which will give their knowledge them and enlighten them about the country. This particular book is mainly for Organisations, Universities, Colleges and those interested in child study and research.
