Hard Times is an introspective study by the author on the aftermath of the Industrial Revolution and the effects it had on the mental state of the people. The author is cynical about the way of life led by people during the Victorian era. He has also been critical of the Industrial Revolution since he feels that it took away the simplicity and happiness from the average human. This is a simple tale of Bounderby, Gradgrind, and M'Choakumchild. The theme more or less focuses on the socio-economic conditions that were prevalent in 19th century England. Dickens has used this novel to express his displeasure at some partisan decisions taken by the men in power. The most ambitious legislation of Utilitarianism that was expected to bring a social order was interpreted as one of misery by Dickens. He has also criticized the Poor Law of 1834, which made the daily worker toil under treacherous conditions. In summation, this work of Charles Dickens is not just another story but an illustration of the way of life in Victorian England. About the Author Charles Dickens was born on 7th February, 1812, in Portsmouth, England. He is an eminent writer of the nineteenth century. His books are popular to this day. He gained immense popularity for The Pickwick Papers. He has also written David Copperfield. He died on 9th June, 1870.
