Heidi is a classic children’s novel by Johanna Spyri. This book presents an abridged version for kids of all ages. Summary of the Book Heidi is raised by her aunt Dete following her parents’ death. When she turns 5, she’s left in the care of her grandfather, a recluse living on the alm. Called the Alm-Uncle, the old man hates society and lives alone. He is cold towards his granddaughter, eventually warming up to her once he realizes how intelligent and innocent she is. Heidi begins to meet the other villagers, including the young goatherd Peter and his mother and grandmother. Yet, Heidi’s time begins to run out as her aunt returns to take her to the city. Heidi must live in the wealthy house of Klara Sesemann, as her companion. Soon, Heidi begins to pine for the calm of the alm and the silence of the mountains. Yet, to return home, she has to abandon her newfound friend. She finds that to be an impossible task, for Klara is an invalid, unable to walk. Can Heidi ever return to the home her heart truly desires? About Johanna Spyri Johanna Spyri was a Swiss writer best known for her children’s books. The above title is one of the most widely known works of Swiss literature. The above title was adapted into a hit anime series entitled Heidi, Girl of the Alps by Isao Takahata. It was also adapted into a live action film in 2005 directed by Paul Marcus.
