Curcuma caesia also known as black turmeric is really an enduring spice with somewhat blue dark rhizome. The plant is local to North-East and Central India. Dark turmeric is likewise scantily found in the Papi Hills of East Godavari, West Godavari, and the Khammam regions of Andhra Pradesh. It is an individual from the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) which comprises of 70 types of rhizomatous spices making it a perpetual rhizome. The rhizome of dark turmeric has a high monetary significance attributable to its alleged restorative properties. In west Bengal, the rhizome of the plant is utilized in Kali Puja, and hence the plant is called Kali haldi. By derivation, Kali is the female type of Kala, which means dark tone and subsequently the plant is named as black turmeric in English.
