Herzog is an autobiographical novel by Saul Bellow, told in the form of letters written by Moses E. Herzog. Summary of the Book Moses E. Herzog’s life is floundering before his eyes. He has ended two marriages in divorce, his writing career is in the dumps and his life as an academic has failed. Despite being in a relationship with a woman full of life, he finds himself unable to commit. Moses’ last wedding ended in a humiliating divorce as his wife carried on an affair with their best friend, Valentine Gersbach. Herzog spends his time writing letters to his friends, family members and famous people. However, he never sends these letters to their recipients. He decides to fight a legal battle to regain custody of his daughter Junie, and with this in mind, he sets out to New York to meet his lawyer. Soon, he receives a letter from Junie's babysitter. Valentine had locked Junie in a car while he fought with Madeline in the house. Distraught with this information, Herzog decides to take matters into his own hands, and buys an antique pistol to exact revenge and free his daughter. A powerful portrayal of a man’s love for his daughter, and his shame at his failure to succeed in his life, Herzog’s tale is a story that all fathers and husbands will relate to.
