Hindu principles guide the lives of about one fifth of the world's population. However, its rich mythology is perceived as complex, with the great epics, "Ramayana" and "Mahabharata" replete with myths, legends and fables. This book sets out to demystify this spectacular array for a wide public. Stories drawn mainly from the "Puranas", whose title means "old" (stories), are here arranged in sections corresponding to the five traditional aspects or functions of the divine. Illustrations include manuscript paintings and sculptures from collections in the British Museum and British Library.
