Historical method comprises the techniques and guidelines by which historians use primary sources and other evidence, including the evidence of archaeology, to research and then to write histories in the form of accounts of the past. The question of the nature, and even the possibility, of a sound historical method is raised in the philosophy of history as a question of epistemology. The study of historical method and of different ways of writing history is known as historiography. Historiography refers to both the study of the methodology of historians and the development of history as a discipline, and also to a body of historical work on a particular subject. Historiography has not produced a single method but different traditions, and there is much disagreement about the use of history in social science. This book discusses some of the philosophical issues regarding the historical method, and proposes an approach to the use of historical evidence in constructing and testing scientific theories. The contents of this book are arranged chronologically and subject wise.
