The book was written in 1875, when there was a want of a concise history of many of the native states of India. The author, G.B. Malleson (author of the famous Red Pamphlet during the revolt of 1857), was more than qualified to attempt such a work. Having at his disposal his extensive Library, and access to the major historical compilation of treaties and sunnads, he was able to produce this finished work. This book is divided by the geographical location of the native states in 7 parts. 1 Rajputana which lists 16 native states, both big and small, 2 Central India and Malwa that notices 6 principalities; 3 Bundelkhand - 2 states; 4 Western India - 4 states; 5 Southern India 4 states; 6 Northern India 4 states and 7 Mediatized and minor states. The book has 6 colored maps of the principally described sections.
