About The Author: Lionel James Trotter (1827-1912) was a British colonial officer who served in India. He was the son of Edward Trotter (1805-1831) and Sarah Dickey, both from Calcutta. In 1847, he joined the Indian Army and participated in the Punjab campaign from 1848 to 1849, taking part in the battles of Chilianwala and Gujarat. He also served in the Burma war of 1853. During the mutiny, he commanded at Sabathu. Trotter retired in 1862 with the rank of Captain. Trotter authored several publications, including "History of the British Empire in India, 1844 to 1862," "Warren Hastings: A Biography" (1878), "History of India under Queen Victoria, from 1836 to 1880".
