India, the cradle for one of the most ancient civilizations in the world, has a long and rich history, spanned over thousands of years. In fact, the history of India begins with the evidence of human activity millions of years ago. The Indus Valley Civilization, was the first major civilization. Vedic Civilization, witnessed the rise of major polities. Almost the whole country was controlled by Mauryan Empire and it was again united under Gupta Empire. Muslim rule in the subcontinent began, when the Arabs conquered Sindh and Multan. Then, several invasions from Central Asia, led to the formation of Muslim empires, such as the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire. Mughals conquered most of the northern India and finally controlled the entire sub-continent and Afghanistan. Mughal Empire declined in 18th century. Then, East India Company gained ascendancy over South Asia. Dissatisfaction with Company rule led to an unsuccessful revolt in 1857, after which India was directly administered by British Crown. In 20th century, a nationwide struggle for independence was launched by Indian National Congress. The subcontinent gained independence from Great Britain in 1947, but the country was partitioned into two dominions of India and Pakistan. After Independence, a new era began. This comprehensive book, comprising four volumes covers the entire history of the Indian Nation in a very compact manner. This book is an asset for historians, teachers, students and general readers, at par. About the Author Muzaffar H. Syed, an academic and scholar in his own right, is a seasoned author, with many books to his credit. A prolific writer, he fluently writes on academic, historical, political, social and literary subjects. He is totally devoted to research and serious writing. Highly educated and qualified, he is a trained and experienced journalist, having edited several journals, apart from editing dozens of books. Based in Delhi, he is devoted to research and serious writing on a permanent basis. He has regularly contributed to leading newspapers and periodicals, over the past decades. He has also attended conferences, seminars and symposia on a wide scale. Currently, he heads an academic bureau and a research institution in New Delhi. Among a good number of books to his credit, are included some highly academic works in history. Anil Kumar, a scholar in his own right, has doctrate, with two postgraduate degress, from Agra University. Apart from being a senior lecturer at the degree college in the same university, he has dozens of papers and several book to his credit. He has a special study in Ancient Indian History. B.D. Usmani, a researcher by choice, he is a postgraduate in history, with special study in Medieval Indian History.
