About George Orwell George Orwell was a novelist, journalist, poet and fiction writer. Born in 1903, he contributed to the cause of nationalism and also to the genre of writing. He was born in Motihari in Bihar, India. The author came to England with his mother when he was a year old. He sailed to Burma in October 1922 to join the Indian Imperial Police. Later in 1927, he moved to London to start a writing career. He served as a teacher at Hawthorns High School in West London. He then moved to Spain in 1936, where owing to his police training and skills, he was a militiaman. He was ranked by The Times as one of “The 50 greatest British writers since 1945”.
