A POW who was rescued from captivity travels via Russia to the Polish town of Lodz while still sporting scars from the gulag. He encounters a bizarre array of characters waiting impatiently for a wealthy guy named Bloomfield to return from America in the city's enormous Hotel Savoy. The hotel serves as the setting for characters to pursue fate to its terrible conclusion, much like Europe did in 1932.
