Mackenzie held various administrative roles, including Secretary to the Bengal Government and Member of the Governor-General's Council. During his tenure in Bengal, he faced natural disasters and worked on infrastructure projects like Calcutta's dock improvements. However, his aloofness and poor health made him unpopular. He retired in 1898, returned to the UK, and died in 1902. He was twice married and had two children.
