Mainly, nine vital systems are operative in the human body. These are digestive system, cardiovascular system, lymphatic system, respiratory system, reproductive system, excretory system, skeletal system endocrine and nervous system. The functioning of different organs associated with these systems is closely interlinked. To sustain life, we need to have a perfect functioning of all these systems. However, many a time, it is not so. We get some physiological disturbances in the smooth running of metabolic activities related to some of these systems. It is manifested in one or the other disorders (diseases). In the earlier century, we witnessed infectious diseases (like tuberculosis, plague, cholera) caused due to infection by some pathogens. These were mainly treated by antibiotics and other similar drugs. The present time has been dominated by chronic degenerative disorders; prominently cancer, diabetes, coronary artery disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s dementia, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, cataracts, etc. These are in no way infectious; hence, they do not spread from one person to the other. These chronic disorders greatly affect our quality of life. Oxidative stress is the root cause of all such problems. The use of antioxidants may help us greatly in keeping these problems at bay. The understanding of human body systems, and disorders related to them, have been discussed in this book in a simplified manner.
